Freshers’ Week begins in Southampton; disappointment as nobody turns up

Published:September 26, 2011

Hoards of new undergraduate students moved into Southampton University halls of residence over the weekend.

The 7,000 or so “freshers” will now enjoy a fortnight of mayhem with events spanning from nights out to tiddlywinks competitions.

However, massive disappointments were echoed at SUSU, the Student’s Union, when nobody actually turned up at the organised Welcome Parties this weekend.

It appears that a glitch in the Box Office system suggested that all tickets had sold out – deterring any students from buying.

This was the case for both Saturday’s and Sunday’s event, held in The Cube The Union – Southampton.

The doors opened at 21:00 BST, though was empty right through to 02:00 BST, the following morning.

This left a baffled team of sabbaticals awaiting for people to arrive all night.

A spokesperson for the Union said that “man, this is not going to bode well for the year ahead”

The Ents team – responsible for the set up of the venue, and were reportedly preparing a spectacular array of effects, music and lightling – are reported to be grieving in a secret location in Southampton.

The Freshers’ Foam Party held yesterday evening at Sobar was in contrast heaving, having to operate a one-in-one-out queue formation from as early as 14:00 BST, which has created mixed opinions.

Other events coming up this week organised by YOUR SUSU include the Bunfight and Freshers Fayre, Glamourpuss & Twisted nights and other odd bits and bobs.

These things do happen – ever hear about the Archers Road festival? The JCR never lived it down.
